Dorothy J. Smothers

Services for Dorothy Jean Smothers will be at 1:00pm on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at Lone Star Missionary Baptist Church. Rev. Dennis L. Pursley will be officiating. Interment will be in Lone Sar Cemetery #6.

Ms. Smothers, 75, of Alexandria, LA, passed away on October 16, 2025, at Matthews Memorial Health Care.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Louis Smothers & Doris Smothers; grandparents, Rev. Belton Hawkins, Sr. & Mattie Mae Hawkins, stepmother, Stellar Smothers, sisters; Rebecca Smothers, Terry Smothers, & Vera Smothers.

Dorothy Smothers was born December 1, 1949, in Alexandria, LA. She passed away peacefully following a brief residence at Matthew Memorial Health Care. She as a longtime resident of Alexandria, where she shared many years with her devoted companion, the late Mack Handy.

Ms. Smothers was a faithful member of Lone Star Missionary Baptist Church, where she found great joy in worship and fellowship with her family and friends. Known for her laughter and resounding voice, her presence was always felt and will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Throughout her life, she dedicated herself to caring for others as a sitter and found happiness in the simple pleasures of family gatherings, good meals, and watching her favorite “me TV” programs. She was lovingly cared for by healthcare professionals and surrounded by family until her passing.

Dorothy leaves to cherish her memories - son: David Houston, brothers: Walter Smothers, George Smothers, Louis Walter Smothers, and James Smothers; sisters: Shirley Smothers and Willow Smothers-Harden.

She will be remembered for her warmth, faith, and the joy she brought into the lives of those around her.
