Graveside Services for Earl Mathews, Jr. will be held on Thursday, October 1, 2026, at 1:30 PM at Central Louisiana Veterans Cemetery, 3348 University Parkway, Leesville, LA 71446

Earl Matthews Jr., 81, peacefully entered into eternal rest on September 23, 2026. Born January 25, 1945, in Chambers, Louisiana, he was the beloved son of Mary Hayward Matthews and Earl Matthews Sr.

Earl proudly served in the United States Army from 1965 to 1972, completing two tours in Vietnam as an infantryman. He was awarded two Bronze Star Medals for his bravery and distinguished combat service. Following his military service, Earl enjoyed a long career with AFCO Industries, where his dedication and strong work ethic helped him provide for his family.

A man of faith, Earl was a devoted member of Oakland Baptist Church and a Lifetime Member of VFW Post 8852. He loved spending time with family, sharing his opinions, and cheering for his beloved Oakland Raiders. He will be remembered for his strength, honesty, conviction, and devotion to those he loved.

Earl was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Charles Chambers, Rachel Chambers, and Johnnie Nell Chambers.

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Nora Mae Matthews; his children, Effie Matthews (Brittany), Cinda Matthews, Demetrice Birdlong, and Charles Allen Jr. (LaRaysha); his siblings, Diallo Sekou (Adoria), Virginia Fields, and Wilma Offord Tucker (Mozell); his sister-in-law, Laura Mae Comeaux; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, friends, and fellow veterans.

Earl shared a special bond with his beloved niece and caregiver, Letonia Reed-Johnson, affectionately known as his “ChickaDee.” Her loving care and faithful companionship brought him comfort and joy throughout his later years.

Earl’s legacy of service, faith, strength, and love will live on through his family and all whose lives he touched. His memory will forever be cherished.
