Services for Josephine Madeline Augustine Fontenot will be at 11:00a.m. at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Marksville, LA. Interment will be in St. Joseph #2 Cemetery.
Josephine Madeline Augustine Fontenot was born October 14, 1933, in Marksville, Louisiana, to Merlin and Nora Augustine. She was the second of six children born to this union. Josephine was baptized at Holy Ghost Catholic Church and remained a faithful Catholic throughout her life.
Josephine became a Licensed Practical Nurse in 1970. Upon graduation from nursing school, Josephine worked at Valley View Healthcare Facility and Colonial Nursing Home. On August 31, 1972, she became a school nurse for the Avoyelles Parish School Board. She worked as a school nurse under the ESEA Federal Program at the following schools: Bunkie High, Marksville High, Marksville Middle, LaFargue, Mansura Middle, Cottonport, and Plaucheville. She retired from the Avoyelles Parish School Board on July 31, 1998.
Josephine loved to visit her children and grandchildren during her summer vacation and after her retirement. She loved to travel and went on numerous vacations with them. She would always ask where was our vacation going to be next year. Her other favorite pastimes were: watching Days of Our Lives, reading the daily newspaper and magazines, praying the Rosary, doing crossword puzzles, and talking to her family and friends on the phone for hours. Josephine loved to make yeast rolls and delicious homemade cakes for her family when she knew they would be gathering for the holidays. Her favorite holidays were: Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter.
Josephine loved her faith and her Church dearly. She supported the Church with her time, talent, and resources. She served as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, was a member of the Christian Mothers Organization, and helped count the weekly offering. She could always be depended upon to sell raffle tickets for the annual bazaar at her Church. Throughout her life, Josephine was always generous towards her family, friends, and strangers. She was always willing to help others.
On January 2, 1954, Josephine was united in Holy Matrimony to Clifton Joseph Fontenot Jr. Six children were born to this union.
Josephine departed this life on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, at Valley View Nursing Facility at the age of 90. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clifton Fontenot Jr., her parents, Merlin and Nora Augustine, three sisters, Catherine Alexander, Dorothy Rogers, and Sister Concetta Augustine, and three foster brothers, Gerald Sarpy, Michael Sarpy, and Peter Sarpy.
Josephine leaves to cherish her memory two (2) sons, James (Mary) Fontenot of Conway, Arkansas, Robert (Carrie) Fontenot of Pineville, Louisiana, and four daughters Mary (Columbus) Smith of Marksville, Louisiana, Bridget (Archie) Wright of Missouri City, Texas, Rose (Lloyd) Rankin of Abbeville, Louisiana and Clara (William) Gray of Houston, Texas. She also leaves behind sixteen grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren; one brother Merlin Augustine Jr. (Beverly), of Fayetteville Arkansas, two sisters Audrey Keller of Bunkie, Louisiana, and Karen Alexander of Port Allen, Louisiana, one brother-in-law Leo Rogers of Hessmer, Louisiana, one sister-in-law Jacqueline Fontenot of Cocoville, Louisiana and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
