Rodney B. Howard

Rodney Boston Howard, a cherished soul who walked this earth with a spirit of joy and laughter, was called home by the Lord on September 12, 2025, at the age of 68. Born on May 8, 1957, in Alexandria, Louisiana, to the late Maxine Williams-Howard and Albert Howard, Sr., Rodney was a beacon of light in the lives of all who knew him. He passed away at his residence in Lafayette, Louisiana.


Rodney was a proud attendee of Alexandria Senior High School, where he formed many lifelong friendships. After high school, he honorably served his country in the United States Army, an experience that shaped much of his character and instilled in him a sense of fulfillment. Rodney's entrepreneurial spirit led him to become an excellent barber and the owner of the first Black-owned detail shop in Alexandria, a testament to his hard work and dedication. His diverse career also included positions at Angola State Prison, Union Pacific, Holsum Bakery, and JCPenney, where he was respected for his work ethic and camaraderie.

Rodney allowed his Christian faith to guide him in all aspects of the challenges and trials of his life. His belief in God's word was unwavering, and he often shared his favorite scripture, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" (Philippians 4:13), with those he encouraged within his Lafayette community.

Rodney's life was rich with relationships, and he is survived by his loving children, Tamekia (Melvin) Lavalais-Burns, Jessica Howard, and Justin Howard. He was the proud grandfather of eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, who will miss his playful spirit and boundless love. Rodney also leaves behind his siblings, James (Barbara) Howard of Fort Worth, Texas, Benjamin Howard, Sr., Deborah Howard-Dumars, and Jacqueline Howard-Allen, all of Alexandria, Louisiana. He was preceded in death by his parents, Maxine and Albert Howard, Sr., his grandparents, Frank Williams, Inez Randall-Williams, James Lofton, and Ester Randall Lofton-Barnes, and his dear sister, Katherine Howard-Scheriger, and brother, Albert Howard, Jr.


Rodney's life was a tapestry of joyous moments, often filled with his laughter and the humor that earned him the title of a jokester. He had a unique way of making everyone feel special, often referring to himself as "a gift to women," which always brought a smile to those around him. His magnetic personality drew people to him, and he cherished the bonds he formed with his seven nieces, nine nephews, and a host of cousins, relatives, and friends.

As we celebrate Rodney's life, we remember the words of Maya Angelou, "People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." Rodney Boston Howard made us all feel loved, valued, and full of joy. His legacy of laughter, kindness, and faith will continue to resonate in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.


We bid farewell to Rodney, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. His memory will be a cherished treasure in our hearts until we meet again in the presence of our Heavenly Father.
